Johannesburg -

A 16-year-old boy from Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, is being assessed by a panel of experts after he allegedly killed his grandmother with a sword, reports said on Friday.

The Roodepoort Record local newspaper said on its website that the teenager was at the Bosasa Youth Development Centre in Mogale City where he was being assessed.

The Hoërskool Florida pupil allegedly stabbed his 76-year-old grandmother with a sword on Monday and was arrested at a friend's house in Georgina on Monday afternoon.

The boy went to the friend's house after stabbing his grandmother in the neck and chest, Beeld newspaper reported.

The boy's sister locked herself in a room when he attacked his grandmother and the domestic worker fled from the house.

His friend told the Record: “Both death and murder were fascinating concepts to my friend.

“He always spoke highly of assassins and serial killers and imagined himself as an assassin.”

The boy appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

His lawyer Aadil Lambat said the next court date would depend on the outcome of the assessment and would be confirmed in the next week. - Sapa
