Johannesburg - A Limpopo mother-of-two told how she watched helplessly as her 19-year-old daughter was raped on Thursday night.

She said the intruder pointed at her with an object she believed to be a gun in a dark, one-room shack at Mmamatsha village in the Ga-Molepo area, east of Polokwane.

“He first knocked and demanded that we open the door, but I refused,” she said.

When he threatened to break the door, she phoned her neighbours. None of them came to her rescue, though, she said.

Moments later, the man forcibly entered the shack.

She said he immediately ordered them to remain silent if they did not want to die.

“He instructed me to show him where my eldest daughter was sleeping, and he went for her,” the woman said.

After raping the 19-year-old, he demanded cash. “We did not have the money, but he took our two cellphones and fled,” said the teenager, who can’t be named for legal reasons.

The heartbroken mother and her daughter said they could not identify the rapist because it was dark.

But Mankweng police spokesman Constable Matimba Maluleke said the suspected rapist was known. “No arrest has been made because he is still at large,” he said.

Maluleke said the suspect dropped his own cellphone at the victims’ gate while he was fleeing.

“We now know that even his parents have previously obtained a protection order against him,” he said.

A case of robbery and rape is being investigated.
