A teenager who allegedly shot dead a 15-year-old pupil and wounded another during a fight outside a school gate last week claims he was being attacked when he fired the fatal shot.

The boy, a minor, told the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday that he would plead not guilty to charges of murder and attempted murder because he acted in self-defence.

He claims that one of the boys he shot had attacked him with a knife, while the other had assaulted him outside the primary school last week.

The teen indicated he would possibly plead guilty to the charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was remanded at a place of safety until December 4.

Prosecutor Rene Padayachee confirmed that the investigating officer still had to obtain a statement from the 15-year-old boy who is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot in the stomach.

Akhona Nakile, the other teen, was gunned down with a 9mm pistol.
