Cape Town - Thieves escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash after blasting open a safe at a Baby City clothing and goods store in Parklands .

It is believed the attack on the Baby City branch took place early on Thursday morning, but security only discovered the damage while patrolling the area at 6am.

On Thursday morning, the service road around the shop was cordoned off with police tape as officers collected evidence from the scene. It appeared to be a controlled blast with very little debris visible around the site of the explosion.

Baby City regional manager Johan Maree said the target was a drop safe filled with cash collected during business hours at the shop.

“This was basically like an ATM bombing.”

In 2013, cash machines across Cape Town were regularly blasted open.

Maree said no one had been injured.

He was glad the attack had taken place when the Baby City branch was empty.

While the inside of the store is monitored by a set of CCTV cameras, the site of the bombing was a blind spot. There was no footage of the bombers in action that he could hand over to the police.

However, at 9am, investigators were visiting nearby stores hoping to track down a glimpse of the bombers on camera.

Maree said he didn’t want to disclose how much money had been stolen from the safe.

The Table View Community Policing Forum confirmed they were aware of the bombing and that they were trying to obtain more information on the attack.

The baby store robbery followed two pipe bomb attacks earlier this year in September.

In Crawford, a Woolworths store’s window was smashed in by the explosion, but no injuries were sustained.
