Durban - Three men, one of whom is believed to be a police constable from Beaufort West, have been arrested on charges of hijacking and theft of a firearm.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said the men were arrested on Sunday after they were spotted following a cash-in-transit vehicle in Camperdown.

Naicker said that Camperdown police had received a report from a cash-in-transit driver waiting at a supermarket that a black VW Polo sedan was allegedly following him. He said the police responded, and with the assistance of the SAPS Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad and SAPS Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit, they circulated the vehicle’s registration and found that it had been hijacked in Ladysmith in September.

They arrested the men.

Police found an unlicensed 9mm CZ75 pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition, believed to have been stolen in Durban in March 2009.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court later this week.
