Johannesburg - Three men found in possession of R4 million worth of unwrought gold appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Monday, the Hawks said.

Loren Louw, Elvis Tsunda and Webster Vambe, all aged 36, would remain in police custody until their next court appearance on Tuesday, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

The three would apply for bail.

The men were arrested on Friday last week after the Hawks received information of an illegal gold transaction to be concluded at a security complex in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg.

“A 36-year-old suspect was caught processing gold.”

A follow-up investigation led to the arrest of two Zimbabwean men aged 36, in Morningside, Johannesburg.

Unprocessed gold worth more than R4 million and two luxury cars were confiscated.

“Further investigations are ongoing to determine if the three suspects were part of a bigger syndicate dealing in precious metals,” Mulaudzi said at the time.
