Pretoria - A senior Sophiatown police officer alleged to be involved in an elaborate, corrupt scheme with drug dealers appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, said the police’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

The directorate, better known as the Hawks, said the suspect – who was identified as 51-year-old Colonel Mohale Andrew Masia- was attached to Sophiatown Visible Policing. However, national police had in an earlier statement on Monday referred to the colonel as heading up the visible policing operations at the Sophiatown station.

It is alleged that Masia acted in cahoots with drug dealers in various Johannesburg suburbs and had allegedly solicited R6 000 in bribe money in October 2014, making it possible for a suspect to get bail while also destroying the case docket.

Following his appearance on Monday, Masia was released on R5 000 bail and his case was postponed to November 12.
