Cape Town - The jailed tour guide who confessed to his role in the murder of Swedish bride Anni Hindocha told the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday morning precisely how he was recruited.

Mziwamadoda Qwabe is currently serving 25 years in jail for his involvement after he pleaded guilty to the murder and implicated British businessman Shrien Dewani as the mastermind.

In terms of a plea and sentence agreement he had entered into with the State in August 2012, Qwabe also agreed to testify on behalf of the State.

He is the second State witnesses to be called since Dewani pleaded not guilty to the murder and five other charges on Monday.

Qwabe, who is also known by the nicknames Spra and Nono, told the court on Wednesday morning that he was arrested in connection with the murder on November 18, 2010 - five days after Anni was killed.

Almost immediately, he confessed to the killing.

Two years later, he pleaded guilty.

About two days before the murder he received a call from Monde Mlambo, who has since turned State witness, who told him someone had a “job” that needed to be done.

He knew Mlambo because, at a stage, they worked as tour guides at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

Mlambo did not elaborate and told Qwabe that someone would call him about it.

Later Zola Tongo, who has also been jailed for the murder, called him.

“He said someone needed someone to be killed,” Qwabe testified.

The agreed that they would meet to discuss the issue the following day.

The court proceedings were interrupted because the audio system was not working well.

The case continues. - IOL
