Tonga - An Mpumalanga teenage mother accused of strangling her 18-month-old daughter is expected to go on trial in April.

Nomcebo Mahlalela, 18, of Tsambokhulu Trust near Komatipoort, was not asked to plead to a charge of murder when she appeared in the Tonga Regional Court on Thursday, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Mahlalela, who is in Grade 12 this year at Lebombo High School, was arrested on May 16, 2014 after her neighbours grew suspicious when they did not see her with her toddler, Faithful Masinga.

It was later found that the child had been strangled and her body left on a mountain near the Swazi border.

Magistrate Edgar Moletsane extended Mahlalela's R1 000 bail and scheduled the trial to start on April 16.
