Rustenburg - Three women are expected to appear in the Lehurutshe Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after they tried to leave the country in a stolen SUV, North West police said.

Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said the three, aged 51, 34 and 33, were arrested on Tuesday after members of Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) in Lehurutshe received information about a suspected stolen blue Range Rover en route to Zambia.

“The members were on patrol when they spotted the vehicle, and followed it until the Swartkopfontein port of entry where it was stopped,” Moleko said.

“The vehicle had three women occupants inside. Upon questioning, the driver alleged that she was the fiancée of the vehicle’s owner.”

Officers called the owner who informed them that his vehicle was stolen in Sandton on August 21.

“The suspects initially gave the police false information that they were on a business trip to Botswana although documents found inside their luggage indicated that they were travelling to Lusaka, Zambia,” Moleko said.

“They were also found with five cellphones and fraudulent documents in their possession.”

Police are also investigating the possibility that the women are linked to another case of a stolen Land Cruiser in Middelburg in Mpumalanga.
