Trio jailed for murdering flirt

Cape Town - Three men have been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each for killing a man who had made advances to on one of their girlfriends, police said on Monday.

“The Western Cape High Court sentenced 21 year old Abongile Damente, brothers Onke and Odwa Mtwalo, aged 21 and 27 years old respectively, to 25 years behind bars for the murder of Thobelani Mdali. They were handed the sentences on 11 May 2015,” police said.

The accused allege Mdali flirted with one of their girlfriends, and on the evening of March 2, 2012 they waited for him and as he left a church service in Ncumo Street, Harare where they shot him five times. He died on the scene.

The three killers, along with another one of their friends, Mandikhaya Mbali, also killed a police officer on the same day.

Earlier this year, they were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of the Phillipi East police officer Constable Xoliswa Banga.
