Pretoria - Police on Thursday night confirmed the arrest of a City of Tshwane ward councillor on charges of malicious damage to property.

Spokeswoman Ann Poortman said the ANC councillor, whose name cannot be disclosed until she has appeared in court, was arrested just before midday on Thursday.

“The councillor has been detained at the Pretoria West police station and will be appearing in court soon,” said Poortman.

The Pretoria News established the charges were apparently linked to the involvement of the councillor in the forceful removal of a resident from her house.

The EFF and community members encouraged and assisted the complainant to lay charges against the councillor.

ANC Tshwane spokesman Paul Mojapelo said he had asked the chief whip of council Jabu Mabona to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest and report back to him urgently.

Mojapelo said, however, “the law had to take its course and the councillor should face the music”.
