Cape Town - A man accused of the murder of a pair of toddler twins in Caledon was apparently stabbed four times in the back of a police van on Monday.

His trial in the Western Cape High Court was postponed to Tuesday to assess his condition and how soon he is able to proceed.

Heinrich Siegels, 32, stands accused of murdering 2-year-old twins Ranecia and Ranetha Neelse, who were stabbed multiple times, almost two years ago. He and the girls’ mother had at the time been in a relationship.

He contends that he cannot remember the day of the incident. In court, it was noted that Siegels was “indisposed”.

It was not clear what had been used to stab him en route to the high court from Pollsmoor Prison.

Siegels has pleaded not guilty to the nine charges, including murder, assault and attempted murder.
