Johannesburg - The streets of Joburg turned bloody yet again on Wednesday as an armed gang of alleged bogus cops engaged in a near-death gun battle with two men while another shootout in Doornfontein claimed the life of a suspected robber.

In End Street, about four men dressed in police uniform pumped several rounds of ammunition into Willie Delport jr and his stepfather, Matthew Wouters, duping bystanders into believing they were real officers apprehending criminals.

A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was convinced that they were real police officers.

“They were wearing the uniform, the vests and they were heavily armed,” the man said.

He said when the pair stopped on the street, the gang driving in a BMW and a Ford Focus blocked them.

They then allegedly shot at Wouters and dragged him out of the car. “I heard him pleading with the men for his life.”

The men then allegedly shot at Delport, who was in the driver’s seat, and took items from the car before “calmly” fleeing.

The man then called police and emergency services. The pair, who were shot several times, were stabilised before being airlifted to hospital.

Police spokesman Constable Michael Kgatleconfirmed the incident but said no arrests have been made.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, a suspected robber was killed and a woman injured during a robbery at a business on the corners of Rocky and Sherwell streets in Doornfontein
