Johannesburg - Two of 12 awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from holding cells at two different Limpopo police stations have been rearrested, police said on Tuesday.

“Monti Shai and Koketso Nkoana, who escaped from Tubatse police cells were rearrested this afternoon [on Tuesday],” said spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto.

Six suspects escaped from the Mecklenburg police station and the other six managed to escape from the Tubatse police cells at the weekend.

At both stations, the prisoners escaped after they managed to saw through the mesh wires of the roof of the exercise room, said Otto.

They were detained for crimes ranging from rape, robbery, housebreaking, theft and public violence.

Shai and Nkoana were expected to appear in the Tubatse Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of escaping from custody.
