Johannesburg - Two security guards were shot and wounded in a botched robbery in Lonehill, northern Joburg, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said a security guard who was patrolling the perimeter of a housing complex noticed a suspicious vehicle which turned into the complex.

“The officer reported the vehicle to the control room. He was then approached by three men who got out of the car.”

Jacobs said the men accosted the security guard and robbed him.

One of the suspects then shot him in the arm.

“A second security reaction officer arrived on the scene and was shot in the neck before the suspects escaped,” she said.

The three men fled the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz.

“The two security guards were rushed to hospital and are receiving treatment for their injuries,” Jacobs added.

No arrests have been made.

E-blockwatch founder André Snyman noted a rise in the number of violent incidents between criminals and security companies lately.
