Cape Town - Two men have been arrested in Cape Town in connection with the murder of a 33-year-old Congolese national who had been a doorman at a nightspot in popular Long Street, Western Cape police said on Friday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said the two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested on Thursday, at different locations in Cape Town.
On June 20, Joe Kanyona, who was employed as a doorman at Beerhouse on Long Street, was stabbed to death in an incident which shocked the city and which shed light on a reported protection racket operating in city CBD.
According to media reports, Long Street business owners reportedly feared for their lives and those of their doormen and patrons if they refused to pay “protection services” each month.
Traut said the investigation was yet to be are finalised and there was a possibility of more arrests.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 29.
