Port Elizabeth - Two men were arrested for attempted robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm at Kwanobuhle in the Eastern Cape, police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson warrant officer Gerda Swart said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 9:30pm on Mabandla Road.

“Police officials from SAPS Kwanobuhle, Warrant Officer Jacobus Wyatt and Constable Wayne Menezes, who were busy with routine patrols, responded immediately to the assistance of a community member last night when two armed suspects attempted to hijack his VW Polo,” said Swart.

The police members chased and apprehended the two men and seized an unlicensed 9mm firearm and rounds from the magazine, Swart said. The two suspects, aged 32 and 56, were arrested and face charges ranging from attempted hijacking to the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The two suspects were due to appear in the Kwanobuhle Magistrate’s’ Court on Wednesday.
