East London - Two men have been arrested in connection with the assault of lawyer Dali Mpofu in East London, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

The two, both aged 23, were arrested in Cambridge on Tuesday, said Brigadier Phuti Setati.

“The police managed to recover the (alleged) weapon... as well as the cellular phone that had been stolen,” he said.

Mpofu, who is representing miners involved in last year's police shootings in Marikana, was robbed and stabbed while walking on a beach in East London on April 11.

The former SABC CEO was discharged from hospital three days later and advised not to travel by air because of damage to his lungs.

Setati said police had established that both arrested men were out on bail of R500 each for an alleged robbery in October.

In that crime, a tourist and a police reservist were robbed of their cellular phones. The pair were due back in the East London Magistrate's Court on May 24 for the robbery case.

In the Mpofu case, the two were due to appear in the same court on Friday facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and robbery.
