Mmabatho - Two men were killed and three others seriously injured on Thursday in a shooting at a provincial building in Mmabatho, North West police said.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said a man started shooting while outside the building housing several the departments.

The middle-aged man apparently entered the building and fired shots inside the offices of the human settlements department.

Two people were injured from ricocheting shots. The third victim suffered head injuries after being struck with a gun.

“The man allegedly went to one of the offices where he shot and killed one person, then turned the gun on himself when police arrived,” Mokgwabone said.

His motive was not immediately clear. The injured - two women and a man - were taken to a nearby hospital.

Human settlements spokesman Ben Bole said the man was an official at the department.

MEC Nono Maloyi condemned the shooting and sent condolences to the families of those affected, he said.

The department would conduct its own internal investigation.

Mokgwabone said a case of two counts of attempted murder, one of murder and an inquest would be investigated.
