Bloemfontein -

Two men, one of them a minister, were killed in an attack in Harrismith and one man has been arrested, Free State police said on Friday.

The 60-year-old clergyman was in the living room of his home with his wife, son, and daughter's fiance when three intruders entered on Thursday night, said Sergeant Mmako Mophiring.

His daughter was not in the house at the time.

The assailants locked the reverend's son in the bathroom. He was not hurt.

The daughter's 25-year-old fiance was shot in the head and died at the scene.

The reverend was wounded and taken to hospital. He died on Friday morning.

His 59-year-old wife was taken to hospital, but it was unknown if she was shot or assaulted, said Mophiring.

“We have not yet taken statements from the family, so I won't be able to tell you if she was injured.

“We also don't know if anything was taken from the home. Only they will know that.”

Police were alerted after the attack, and a man covered in blood was spotted by police walking on the N3 highway.

He was found to be in possession of five cellphones and a firearm. One of the cellphones belonged to a member of the family.

Police hoped his arrest would help them track down the other two intruders.

Mophiring said it was unclear if a getaway car had been used or not. - Sapa
