Cape Town - A police task team set up to investigate the murder of a Delft high school pupil has arrested two men.

The teenager was shot on Friday last week.

Information gathered indicated that the 18-year-old had gone to get his hair cut but as he left the barber shop, suspects opened fire on him in the street, fatally injuring him,” police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana said.

The suspects then ran away.

The police, which set up a task team to investigate the murder in Roosendal Street, have made a major breakthrough and arrested two men aged 18 and 26, Kinana said.

He said the pupil had gunshot wounds to his face and head and died on the scene.

“It is believed that he would have attended his matric farewell on Wednesday night at the Roosendal High School in Delft,” Kinana said.

He said the men, who were arrested on Thursday, would appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Western Cape Education Department spokeswoman Jessica Shelver said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of such a young life.

“Our condolences go out to the family, school and surrounding community,” Shelver said.

She said despite the incident not taking place at the school premises, the department was concerned about any violence affecting pupils whether inside or outside the school premises.

“We cannot however take sole responsibility for the safety of learners especially when they are outside the school grounds.

“We need the assistance of law enforcement agencies such as police.

“The provincial government will continue to engage with the police when it comes to stepping up law enforcement around our schools,” Shelver said.
