Johannesburg - Two Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers that were shot and wounded in Ivory Park are in a serious condition in Sunninghill Hospital on Monday, the department said.

Spokesman Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the officers were directing traffic at Republic Road and Archerfish Road in Ivory Park in eastern Johannesburg on Sunday night at around 7.50pm when they were shot.

“The officers were busy directing traffic at the intersection where the lights were out when a man came walking by and took out a firearm. He shot the metro police sergeant twice in the upper body and in both legs. The patrol officer was shot in the neck,” Minnaar said.

The man fled the scene. No arrests have been made, said Minnaar.
