Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance has extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of two police officers killed on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“Our policemen and women put their lives at risk every day in order to protect South Africans and keep our streets safe. Their bravery does not go unnoticed,” DA spokesman Zakhele Mbhele said in a statement on Saturday.

“On behalf of the DA, I will be tabling a motion without notice in the National Assembly next week so that Parliament can join the DA in extending its condolences to the families and friends of those who have fallen in the line of duty.”

Recent reports had claimed that 55 police officers – both on and off-duty- had been killed this year alone.

“These numbers are alarming and need to be taken seriously by SAPS (SA Police Service) management and the Minister of Police (Nkosinathi Nhleko).

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of these police officers during this difficult time,” Mbhele said.

According to media reports, an off-duty Gauteng police officer was shot in Laudium, Pretoria, on Friday night and died in hospital a few hours later.

Two other officers were shot in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, early on Saturday morning. One was fatally wounded and the other was wounded.
