Johannesburg - Two suspected house robbers were wounded in a shoot-out with police in Lenasia, Johannesburg, on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

Three others were arrested, while one more was being sought by police, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

“Police are searching neighbouring houses in the area to find him,” he said.

Makhubela said police received a phone call at 3am about a house robbery in progress.

“We proceeded to the area and when we arrived we found people inside the house taking items from the house, which were already outside.”

These included television sets, electronics, and jewellery.

Shooting began when the gang saw police.

“They shot at police and police shot back. Two suspects were wounded - one in the right thigh and the other in the upper body,” said Makhubela.

They were taken to hospital.

One suspect managed to flee.

Police recovered one firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash that had allegedly been taken from the home.
