Johannesburg - Limpopo University has always known about the alleged fake matric certificate of its top official, but kept it a secret.

Insiders said the university management and council have for years been aware of Lazarus Lebelo’s questionable matric certificate.

Lebelo, 59, who is the university’s labour relations manager, was arrested on Tuesday night at his Polokwane home. He appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of fraud and was released on R3 000 bail.

“(He) allegedly used a fraudulent matric certificate to acquire employment at (the) university in 1996.

“The serial number of the certificate he used belonged to somebody else. Lesiba earned over R10 million in his 19 years of service,” Hawks spokesman Lieutenant Robert Netshiunda said.

Lebelo allegedly used his late wife’s matric results.

“She spilled the beans before she died as he wanted to divorce her,” a source said.

The case was postponed to November.
