Pretoria - Mapula Malemone, 29, says justice was not served after her long-term lover, who sexually assaulted and attempted to murder her, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

“Twelve years is too little for what he did to me. Justice was not served,” Malemone told the Pretoria News.

The Moretele Magistrate’s Court on Monday sentenced Phuti Malema to 12 years for attempted murder and five years for sexual assault.

The two terms will run concurrently meaning Malema will serve a 12-year prison term.

In a jealous rage fuelled by rumours that Malemone was cheating on him, Malema waited for her to fall asleep and then attacked her, mutilating her genitals in April last year.

He apparently drank a certain amount quantity of alcohol to get courage to carry out the deed and then stabbed her in the neck, paralysing her before cutting out her vagina.

When she woke up, Malema pulled out her vagina from his pocket and licked it, telling her he had her “nice thing”.

“He will be out and what if he tries to kill me?” she asked in a telephone interview with Pretoria News on Tuesday.

Malema pleaded guilty to the crimes and chose to represent himself during proceedings.

Before his sentencing, Malema addressed the court and asked the magistrate to be lenient on him by giving him a suspended sentence so he could go home and raise their three children and also to reconcile with Malemone.

When told about what her ex-boyfriend had said, Malemone was surprised.

“He can’t fix anything. He is mad. He wanted to kill me,” she said.

Malemone is now confined to a wheelchair and cannot do anything for herself or her children.

In her victim impact statement, which was mentioned in court on Monday, Malemone said her doctors had told her that she should pray for a miracle as it seemed she may not recover from her injuries.

She told the Pretoria News that internally she was still in severe pain and walks with a limp.

Malemone will be at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital later this month for another operation.

Malema was given 14 days to appeal against his sentence.
