Johannesburg - The bail application of a man accused of murdering a Muslim during a fight is expected to continue in the Krugersdorp Regional Court on Tuesday.

Roedolf Viviers, 28, began his bail application on Thursday, during which his lawyer Hendrick Nortjie said he did not believe there would be a public outcry if he were given bail.

Viviers faces charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Nortjie cited the health of Viviers' mother and the family's financial difficulties as reasons for him to get bail.

Viviers and another man, Zayne van Tonder, 33, allegedly insulted Muhammad Fayaaz Kazi and his friend Anser Mahmood at a Chicken Licken outlet in Magaliesburg on August 6, 2012.

An argument and a fight ensued. Kazi was severely beaten and died in hospital.

Charges against Van Tonder were later dropped and he was released.

During an adjournment at Thursday's hearing, Kazi's family and friends expressed outrage at Nortjie's statement.

“They want a public outcry, we will show them a public outcry,” they said. - Sapa
