Durban - In the first days of 16 Days Of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse, a shocking video has surfaced, showing a woman being manhandled by three police officers.

It is believed the police officers are from the Phoenix Police Station, North of Durban.

In the video one of the police officers can be heard saying: “Hold her….grab her feet” while laughing, and the lady seems to be struggling and resisting arrest while screaming “leave me alone”.

The scene attracted a large crowd of observers, but no-one intervened, despite the force the police applied.

The video garnered mixed reactions on Facebook, where one user, Mohammed Ismail, commented “She probably one of those moon light girls. Which is illegal. She is clearly resisting arrest. No fault on the police side there, no abuse there of any sort, unless may be I am blind , iI m missing something. Well done to the police we don't need this sort of trash on our street.”

Tammy Maharaj said “The manner in which a female is being arrested is disgusting and unacceptable. Clearly 16 days of activism against children and woman are not considered. If the police don't respect our woman how are others to follow. Their is a procedure you follow arrest. Not use abuse and violence”.

DA ward councillor, Bradley Singh, who posted the video said: “I'm appalled by the way the police behaved, and how they treated a female. The sad reality is we are currently around the country with a national awareness campaign for 16 days of activism against woman and child abuse”

“The police in Phoenix are abusing a woman. Whatever the circumstances were, male police should not treat females like this. You could hear the female screaming and this is totally unacceptable, I will be also ensuring that the management of the Phoenix Police investigate this unfortunate incident”.

Provincial Communication Officer, Jay Naicker, said he couldn't comment on the video since he has not seen it.

North Cluster SAPS Communication Officer, Lieutenant Louise Naidoo, said she had not seen the video but many people had told her about snippets of the video, saying that there was a lady resisting arrest and the police officers carried the lady and put her into the van.

“According to the people I have spoken to, our members were not wrong at all. The female was not put into the vehicle, she jumped into the police vehicle herself, not in the back, into the front. This was witness by a person who lived on the same road were the they were”.
