Pretoria - Two of the so-called Waterkloof Four have notified the Pretoria High Court of their intention to appeal against a judgment ordering them to return to jail on July 10, Beeld reported on Friday.

Reinach Tiedt and Gert van Schalkwyk would be “broken emotionally and financially” if they had to return to jail, their lawyer, Jenny Brewis, said.

The pair had until Thursday to notify the court if they would appeal last month's ruling.

Judge Hans Fabricius set aside the warrant for the pair’s release signed on December 15, 2011. He found their sentences should not have been converted into correctional supervision.

This was after they had served three years and four months in jail. Tiedt and Van Schalkwyk, together with Christoff Becker and Frikkie du Preez, each received 12 years in prison after murdering a man in a Pretoria park in 2001.

Tiedt and Van Schalkwyk were released on December 19, 2011, following an order by Pretoria Regional Court magistrate Peet Johnson after a recommendation by the Zonderwater Correctional Supervision and the Parole Board.

Brewis said the notification of the appeal meant her clients did not need to return to jail yet. - Sapa
