Johannesburg - The police have launched an investigation into the shooting of a man of Jordanian nationality near Eastgate Mall on Wednesday night.

The 39-year-old was found lying on the tarmac with multiple bullet wounds opposite a Mercedes-Benz dealership in the area.

The police found a loaded gun, believed to be his, still on him.

Several bullet cartridges were found around his body.

Bedfordview SAPS spokesman Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi said the dead man was identified only as M Hatter.

It is understood he has been in the country for a while and had family in the area.

“His body was lying on the ground facing up. He had multiple bullet wounds.

“A few cartridges were discovered on the scene. When the paramedics arrived, they certified him dead on the spot,” said Nhlabathi.

All the doors of his grey Ford Ranger were open, and the police believe the vehicle had been searched, but they could not confirm if anything had been taken from it.

The registration plates of the car were personalised in his name.

When The Star visited the scene, a security guard at the entrance of the dealership said his colleague who worked at night had heard three or four shots being fired about 8pm.

It is understood that the man owned a tobacco company in Menlyn, Pretoria, and had a family in Bedfordview.

Nhlabathi said the police were yet to establish the motive for the shooting and whether the incident could be linked to other crimes in the area.

The police are investigating a case of murder.

Nhlabathi called on anyone with information to come forward.
