Durban - A Chatsworth widow died in her home after she was tied up and gagged with a cloth during a robbery early on Tuesday.

Four men entered the house in Fairmont Road, tied up the domestic worker and Bangladeshi market stallholder, Kaliawathie “Kay” Sewcharan, 60. They entered the house by climbing over the neighbour’s fence.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker, said the women had been accosted and tied up with rope.

“Sewcharan died while she was tied up. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” he said.

“At this stage, it is unknown what the suspects took and a case of house robbery and murder has been opened. No arrests have been made.”

Sewcharan’s son-in-law, Kiruben Padayachee, said she did not appear to have been assaulted. He said the domestic worker had managed to get loose and alert the neighbours.

Padayachee said Sewcharan had been well known and well liked in the community.

“She was kind and loving and always trying to help people. We all looked up to her and will miss her.”
