Northern Cape - Six girls and four women accused of killing a woman who escaped from an initiation school appeared in the Hartswater Magistrate's Court, in the Northern Cape, on Thursday.

The matter was postponed to January 9, police spokesman Lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said.

The 10 - nine initiates and the school's head - were linked to the murder of Gabaediwe Motsage, who was sjambokked and stoned to death on Tuesday.

Motsage, 22, was admitted to the initiation school on Monday, but escaped the same night. The group went to her home on Tuesday morning to convince her to return to the school, allegedly because they were concerned she would reveal secrets of the initiation process.

She was assaulted shortly after they fetched her from her home and took her back to the school.

Police and paramedics were alerted, and Motsage was declared dead due to head and body injuries.

The members of the group were aged between 13 and 30. Six of them were minors and were released to the care of their parents. The four adults would remain in custody. - Sapa
