Johannesburg - In a violent finale to a crime-riddled weekend across Gauteng, a woman shot and killed two robbers who broke into her home in southern Joburg early on Monday morning.

Clad in balaclavas, intruders broke into a house on Swartberg street in Glenvista at 4.20am and allegedly shouted at the couple that they were going to shoot them.

But the woman reached for her firearm from underneath her pillow and shot two of the intruders, according to the Glenvista Community Policing Forum.

One suspect died in the bedroom and the other just outside the front door of the premises. The third suspect escaped.

Members of the forum launched a search for the third man but to no avail.

“Both intruders were armed and police have recovered two firearms belonging to the suspects,” the forum said.

In another incident, a man was shot and killed in an attempted robbery outside Westdene Cycles near Sophiatown on Sunday night.

According to a police officer, who asked not to be named, a man had been getting into his car on Main Road when he was accosted by two men.

“He was getting into his vehicle when the two men tried to rob and hijack him. There was a struggle and shots were fired. The man was fatally wounded and died on the scene,” the officer said.

The perpetrators fled the scene and the police were conducting a manhunt to find them, he said.

In another incident on Sunday morning, a Joburg metro officer was shot and injured during a high-speed car chase near Midrand, north of Joburg.

“A white BMW on the N1 highway opened fire on a patrol vehicle after it attempted to stop the vehicle as it was driving at 203km in a 120km/h zone,” Joburg metro police department spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

He said metro police managed to stop the BMW near the Allendale on-ramp.

“A shoot-out ensued with the occupants of the BMW, injuring the officer and shattering the windscreen of the police vehicle.

“The officer was taken to hospital where he was treated and has since been released,” Minnaar said.

It was later discovered that the two men who shot at the officer were wanted in connection with a robbery in Rooihuiskraal near Centurion.

“No arrests have been made but a manhunt is under way,” said Minnaar.
