Johannesburg - The African National Congress Youth League on Monday sent condolences to the families of soccer player Senzo Meyiwa and athlete Mbulaeni Mulaudzi.

“The ANCYL in Gauteng sends its sincere condolences to the families of sporting legends Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Senzo Meyiwa,” spokeswoman Mbali Hlophe said in a statement.

Meyiwa, the 27-year-old Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, was shot dead at a house in Vosloorus at around 8pm on Sunday.

Captain of both club and country, Meyiwa played for Orlando Pirates on Saturday at Orlando Stadium in their Telkom Knockout 4-1 quarterfinal win over Ajax Cape Town.

Mulaudzi was killed when his car overturned on the R555 in Mpumalanga while he was travelling from Ogies towards Emalahleni on Friday morning.

Mulaudzi overcame an injury to win a gold medal in the 800m race at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

He was a former 800m Athens 2004 Olympics silver medallist and a Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

“Their premature passing is indeed a great loss to the country and sporting nation,” the ANCYL said.

They called on the police to act quickly in finding Meyiwa's killers. - Sapa
