Johannesburg - There seems to be a lot of “noise” about NUM members appearing on the ANC's list for the National Assembly, the union's deputy president Piet Matosa said on Friday.
“The National Union of Mineworkers is not contesting the (May 7) elections,” he said at a shop stewards' council in Boksburg.
“The branches of the ANC put them (NUM members) on the list and no one else... The branches have seen a leader in (our) comrade.”
He asked that “noisemakers” respect the processes of the ruling African National Congress.
On the protracted strike in the platinum mining sector, Matosa said a vigilante union was operating in Rustenburg, North West, that had sought to make victims of NUM members.
“NUM members are always the victims and primary target,” he said.
He said members who had left the NUM were returning after being misled.
“We must welcome them back, we must not ask questions.”
Matosa asked members not make populist calls about wages, as that was what started the problems in Rustenburg.
