Eastern Cape - It was tragic that former president Nelson Mandela was celebrating his birthday at a time of instability in the ANC, his former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said on Wednesday.

Madikizela-Mandela told the SABC: “We cannot pretend all is well in the African National Congress.

“According to the secretary general of the ANC, (Gwede) Mantashe, the ANC is imploding and that is not the ANC he (Mandela) gave up his life for and that is not the ANC we all wanted it to be. Especially on his birthday.”

Madikizela-Mandela was speaking at an orphanage in the Eastern Cape, where she was delivering toys to children.

She was in the company of expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema, suspended spokesman Floyd Shivambu and secretary general Sindiso Magaqa. - Sapa
