Cape Town - The ANC intends to dance and sing its way into voters’ hearts to win over the Western Cape.

On Thursday night, the party launched its election song and voiced its intention to have several Western Cape musicians performing at taxi ranks, old-age homes and train stations as part of its campaign.

Musicians such as Themba Fassie (Brenda Fassie’s brother), Daniel Petersen (aka the Little Drummer Boy) and the Blue Diamond Band were named as endorsing the party’s election campaign.

They gathered at Marco’s African Place in Bo-Kaap and entertained ANC members on Thursday night.

Cameron Dugmore told guests that over the years musicians had made struggle songs for freedom.

“Jazz of the 1950s continued in the ANC.

“Whenever we had music in our campaign we did well. Music brings people together, white, Xhosa and coloured.”

He said the party intended to celebrate ANC Friday with a music performance at Cape Town Station early on Friday morning.

Provincial ANC leader Marius Fransman said it was very difficult for musicians and artists before 1994.

“You were not allowed to be the best artist or sport hero, so let’s celebrate our freedom.

“The challenges are huge, with 300 years of genocide and apartheid and only 20 years of freedom; it is still a long way to go.”

The party also announced an ANC Western Cape election song competition open toWestern Cape musicians.

Entries must be uploaded on YouTube by April 23 or can be delivered on DVD or CD to the ANC provincial office. First prize is R20 000 and second prize is R10 000. The competition opens on April 7.
