African National Congress MP Florence Ntombizodwa Nyanda has died, the Office of the ANC Chief Whip said on Sunday.

Nyanda died on Saturday in her home province of Mpumalanga after suffering a “long battle of illness”, it said in a statement.

“We are utterly devastated...”

Nyanda became a member of parliament in 2004, and participated in various parliamentary portfolio committees.

“She was committed to women's issues, and through her longstanding membership of the ANC Women's League, passionately campaigned for the rights of women, gender equality and rights of children,” the office said.

“We dip our revolutionary banner in memory of her selfless sacrifice and service.”

Congress of the People leader Mosiuoa Lekota said he was saddened by the news.

“On behalf of myself and the Congress of the People, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to Ms Nyanda's family and her party... and wish them strength during this difficult time,” he said in a statement.

“May her soul rest in peace.” - Sapa
