Cape Town - The ANC's national executive committee (NEC) has been invited to attend Tuesday afternoon's meeting of the party's national working committee (NWC) in Johannesburg, spokesman Keith Khoza said.
“It is an extended NWC meeting, the members of the NEC have been invited to attend,” Khoza confirmed.
This comes two days after an NEC meeting that discussed “developments in the National Assembly” - as a press statement referred to soaring tensions between the ruling party and the opposition - and two days ahead of a special sitting of the chamber expected to see at least 12 Economic Freedom Fighters MPs suspended for heckling President Jacob Zuma in the house in August.
The weekend's NEC meeting had been meant to be the last for the year.
On Monday, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced after his second meeting with opposition leaders in less than a week, that a truce aimed at restoring calm to the legislature after riot police were called in to evict an EFF MP had collapsed.
He blamed the Democratic Alliance's insistence on proceeding with a motion last week accusing Zuma of ducking questions on the controversy over his Nkandla homestead.
“(This) departed from the spirit around which the deal was struck and we also said that we must now allow processes in Parliament to unfold,” Ramaphosa told reporters after the meeting.
In terms of the truce, Parliament would have held back a report calling for the censure of the EFF members while parties looked for a political solution to the strife.
