Johannesburg - The ANC North West provincial executive committee (PEC) has put its weight behind President Jacob Zuma for a second term as the party's leader.

“The status quo should be maintained with respect to the six NEC (national executive committee) officials, under the leadership of President Jacob Zuma. This should be done to entrench unity and continuity,” provincial spokesman Kenny Morolong said in a statement.

“(However) ANC branches should be allowed without pressure or imposition to nominate their preferred candidates for the NEC, guided by our policy discussion documents.”

Morolong said the PEC's proposal to re-elect the current ANC leadership would be circulated to all its branches and regions.

It will put together a programme for branch general meetings that would start soon.

The ANC officially opened its nomination process on Friday after completing an audit of all its provinces.

The allocation of voting delegates for the party's national elective conference in Mangaung in December was decided on Tuesday.

The North West would have 234 voting delegates of the 4500 at the conference. - Sapa
