ANC self-serving, says Shivambu

Durban - The Economic Freedom Fighters' Floyd Shivambu accused the ANC on Friday of serving the interests of individuals.

"The ANC is an association of self-seeking individuals. It does not exist as an organisation," Shivambu, the party's political commissar, said at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

He said the African National Congress could not claim to be leading a national democratic revolution.

"There is nothing revolutionary about the ANC. Conditions of the working class have not been improved since 1994."

The ANC had failed to recognise what the former ANC Youth League leaders had been seeking to achieve, which was economic freedom. He said the party's acceptance of free trade and the elimination of trade tariffs had cost the country.

"How are we going to create jobs when we have such low tariffs?"

Shivambu said the fact that South Africa had become a net food importer meant there were no jobs. It was time for civil society and parties to come together to transform the country.

Shivambu's reception at the university's Howard College campus was muted in comparison with the reception EFF leader Julius Malema received at the same campus the day before and which he received at Durban's University of Technology (DUT).

Malema told students at DUT's Steve Biko campus that the EFF would not allow the ANC to make the province a no-go area for his party, the SABC reported. He arrived with a large contingent of police and was booed by ANC supporters as he arrived. Police were forced to keep supporters of the two parties apart.

On Thursday Malema was forced to speak on the steps of a UKZN hall after ANC supporters disrupted the event.

The SABC quoted Malema saying: "They (the ANC members) are very few and we will find that some of them are not even students. (It) is a rented crowd paid with yellow T-shirts."

The SABC reported that the ANC said it would investigate the incident, and it did not tolerate its members disrupting other parties' events.

Malema is expected to hold a rally in Umlazi, Durban, on Sunday.
