Johannesburg - The ANC on Monday said it was not aware of a scuffle that reportedly broke out over free food parcels on a train trip from Cape Town to Johannesburg two weeks ago.
“We heard for the first time about that story in the newspaper yesterday (Sunday). We are unaware of that incident,” African National Congress spokesman Zizi Kodwa said.
He did, however, report a different incident relating to the train.
“That same train was pelted with stones near Boland on its way back from the Western Cape. People took cover and nobody was injured.”
The Sunday Times reported that two female ANC members were injured during a scuffle on the train.
Fighting broke out between ANC military veterans and the youth league over food that was meant to be free, but was apparently being sold, the Sunday paper said.
Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association Johannesburg chairman Junior Mokotjo said there was a fight “between two drunk comrades”.
An ANCYL spokesman said the fight was over a seat.
The train was travelling back from the ANC's 103rd anniversary celebrations that had been held in Cape Town.
The train stopped at Klerksdorp station and the passengers were escorted the rest of the way in separate busses.
