Durban - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal launched a volunteer programme on Sunday aimed at reaching out to voters ahead of next year’s local government elections.

The launch in Ixopo was preceded by a clean-up campaign at the town before the party’s newly-elected provincial chairman, Sihle Zikalala, addressed more than 2 000 volunteers from the Harry Gwala region.

Zikalala said as part of the campaign, 50 000 trained volunteers were expected to visit households across the province.

“As we move closer to the local government elections, consistent engagement with our people will be strengthened at all levels to promote open debate and ensure that our people take part in the elections,” Zikalala said.

He said apart from educating and encouraging people to register to vote, they would ensure people had identity documents for voter registration.

Zikalala expected the volunteers to do their work with humility.

“We have a team of volunteers who have been trained not only to educate people about the importance of taking part in the elections, but also to be able to listen to people’s concerns and make us aware of those challenges so that we can intervene.”

Zikalala also said the ruling party aimed to retain all municipalities under its control, and also take control of those it co-governed in coalition, and those controlled by other parties.

“As the ANC, we believe victories we have scored in by-elections in KZN in the past few years are a pointer to what will happen at next year’s local elections.

“The landslide victories we scored confirm that the people of this province remain committed to the ANC. These victories do not make us complacent, but instead encourage us to work hard to ensure the ANC does not just win elections, but maximises its support.”
