The ANC Women's League on Tuesday condemned the serving of sushi on the bodies of half-naked women.
“This is an insult to the principles and values that the ANC stands for,” said spokeswoman Edna Molewa.
“It is a blatant attempt to undermine the selfless sacrifices made by all those who fought for the emancipation and respect of women in our country,” she said.
The organisation viewed the practice an attack on the dignity of women.
“We are appalled by this derogatory act... We cannot allow such an insulting act or anyone trying to associate it with the ANC.”
The statement followed reports on the pre-opening of the Cape Town nightclub ZAR, owned by businessman Kenny Kunene.
At a similar party in Johannesburg last year, sushi was served off women's scantily-clad bodies.
A report said that the Cape Town bash featured bikini-clad women with sushi arranged on their bodies lying on the bonnets of luxury cars.
ANC Youth League president Julius Malema was quoted as saying at the party: “Helen Zille will not close ZAR at 2am, like she does other nightclubs in Cape Town. The ANC owns ZAR and we will party until the morning.”
ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe distanced the party from Malema's comments.
“The ANC is not into nightclubs or partying, but is a revolutionary movement,” he said in a statement. - Sapa
