Durban - The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal wants its Musa Dladla regional secretary, Njabulo Nzuza, to be the next secretary-general when the youth body holds its national congress next month.

The nomination of Nzuza as the preferred candidate is set to dash the hopes of some branches in eThekwini region that want their regional treasurer, Bongani Khuluse, to be nominated for the same position.

On Thursday, ANCYL provincial spokesman, Mkuseli Sonzaba, confirmed to the Daily News that the provincial leadership recently agreed on the nomination of Nzuza, whose region includes Richards Bay and Empangeni.

“We have agreed as KwaZulu-Natal that Njabulo should be the secretary-general,” Sonzaba said.

He also said the announcement of the nomination of Nzuza and other candidates for leadership positions would be made later on Friday after the provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting.

However, some ANCYL members in KZN took their campaign for Khuluse on to social media on Thursday.

When his political profile and a poster was posted on the social media wall of one of the league’s members, this attracted delight, shock and ridicule among the league’s members, with some saying their preferred candidate was Nzuza.

“I don’t think it’s a joke. I think it’s a campaign that was bubbling under for a long time. I have tried to speak about it but comrades tried to dispel it and now it has surfaced. It’s not a joke at all, it is a serious campaign,” Zwelethu KaNoncengwa wrote.

Msa Sodwele-ka Njilo said: “He must focus on his duties in the region and serve the membership who entrusted him this position (regional treasurer).”

His sentiment was echoed by Philangezwi Dlamini who said Khuluse was a good candidate and his “well matching CV (was) for a PEC additional member in the next 3yrs.”

Daluxolo Themba InthandoYakhe Dlomo said: “Regardless of your second hand negative views I support Bongani Khuluse.” Andile Dayi stated: “He (Khuluse) is a good leader, very humbled I must say.”

Sonzaba said Khuluse could well be nominated at today’s meeting for the five additional members earmarked for KZN to serve on the national executive committee.

“The nominations for the top positions are already consolidated,” he said.

Sonzaba also said North West Local Government MEC Collen Maine was their preferred president, his deputy Desmond Moela from Mpumalanga, deputy secretary-general Thandi Moraka from Limpopo and Reggie Nkabinde from Gauteng for the treasurer-general position.

He insisted that other youth league leaders that served in the previous leadership such as Ronald Lamola, Pule Mabe and Magasela Mzobe, would not be backed by KwaZulu-Natal for the presidency position.

“Since we are dealing with rebirth of the league, we want new people with new ideas.”

Meanwhile, the national task team said measures were in place to tackle ill-discipline as the organisation prepares for its elective conference next month.

“There is a false notion on young people that to be revolutionary is to be vulgar, which is misleading,” ANCYL task team national co-ordinator Nathi Mthethwa said.
