Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) will lobby the government to scrap e-tolls in Gauteng.
”The ANC is an organisation of the people, and it should therefore listen to people when they say they do not want e-tolls,” ANCYL secretary Njabulo Nzuza told journalists at a briefing in Pretoria.
“We must investigate other means to fund massive infrastructure projects that the ANC led government has continued to carry out in the quest of improving our people’s lives,” he said
Nzuza said the Youth League wanted the ANC to adopt a new policy and scrap the e-tolls system.
The Gauteng e-toll system was implemented in 2013.
Despite legal battles launched by the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA) against the South African National Roads Agency, the e-toll gantries went live in December 2013.
Earlier this year, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a reprieve for motorists who owed e-toll fees.
This followed a public consultation panel appointed by Gauteng Premier David Makhura, which found that although the system improved the Gauteng transport system, it had put a heavy burden on road users.
