Between the devil and the ACDP

Have you been to Dove's Peak? You haven't? Well, you may have if you've been to Devil's Peak, because they're one and the same. Or at least they will be if the African Christian Democratic Party has its way.

The party is, er, hell-bent on renaming the mountain after a more serene creature. It claims the peak was originally Duiwe's Piek (Dove's Peak) but with time, the Cape accent, English translations and the myth of Van Hunks and the devil, it came to be known as Duiwels Piek, or Devil's Peak.

Ian Kirsten told a bemused city council on Wednesday: "The ACDP wishes to rename Devil's Peak, Dove's Peak."

A councillor said: "Ag, just call it Demon's Peak."

Kirsten continued unfazed.

"We have 1 800 signatures and phone numbers of people who support the renaming - all legitimate."

More sniggers followed, with councillors thinking back to last year's street-renaming debacle. Then, not all petitions were what they purported to be.

While councillors continued to crack jokes, the ACDP's Grant Hasken told Speaker Danny de la Cruz the party was investigating the legal route to renaming the peak.

De la Cruz said he would refer the matter to the council's legal department. - Own Correspondent
