Paul Boughey, the mayor’s chief of staff, has resigned to take over as chief executive of the DA before the 2016 municipal elections.

Boughey announced his new position on Twitter on Tuesday, saying: “It is an honour to have been appointed CEO of the DA from Jan next year. Looking forward to working with the team to build on our successes.”

Boughey replaces Jonathan Moakes, who announced his resignation in August.

Moakes, who headed the party’s operational functions for five years, will officially resign on December 31.

The mayor’s office confirmed the appointment yesterday, saying Boughey would serve a notice period before taking up full-time employment with the DA.

Zara Nicholson, the mayoral spokeswoman, said Boughey was expected to leave the city within the next month.

Boughey was head of parliamentary operations for the DA before he moved to the provincial legislature as head of the education ministry. He has also served as the party’s communications director.

Boughey was part of Patricia de Lille’s power team brought in to manage her office when she was elected as mayor in 2011.

He has ruffled some feathers during his time in the mayor’s office, with Andre Fourie of the Freedom Front Plus recently criticising Boughey for his reproach of political opponents.

Congratulations streamed in on social media on Tuesday.

Moakes showed his confidence in his successor with the tweet: “Have no doubt he will be a great success.”
