Cape Town - Outspoken Cape politician Badih Chaaban has severed all political ties with the ANC after an eight-year working arrangement in several municipalities in the Western Cape.

The National People’s Party’s (NPP) bombshell came to light after its fragile alliance with the ANC and Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (Icosa), crumbled during a special council meeting held in the Oudts-hoorn town council last week.

The NPP voted with the DA after instructing its controversial town speaker, John Stoffels – who has been at the centre of court battles which brought instability to the municipality – to resign.

Fifteen councillors from the DA, NPP and ICOSA attended the meeting while all nine ANC councillors were absent.

“We had a working arrangement with the ANC because the ANC was semi-clean. Now that the party has become dirty, I’ve decided to terminate my arrangement with them,” Chaaban said.

Conceding that the NPP approached the DA – seemingly in an act of kindness – the NPP leader said they’ve done the “right and legal” thing by handing over the municipality to its rightful owners.

“Let me make myself very clear, there is no deal between the NPP and the DA. We have not reached any coalition agreement and we don’t want to. We are acting in the best interest of the people of Oudtshoorn,” Chaaban said.

DA provincial chairman, Anton Bredell, backed Chaaban’s claim, also denying that any deal was brokered with the NPP.

“There is no deal or alliance between the DA and the NPP. It is, however, a positive step that the NPP’s speaker resigned, because he has been at the centre of several court cases that has brought instability in the municipality,” Bredell added.
